The man with slicked back hair saw the elderly couple board the crowded train. He rose from his seat and asked the balding thug sat next to him to let him out. He approached the old lady and offered her his seat which she seemed grateful for. Then, launching himself like a superhero into to throng of travelling commuters he smiled looking round for the applause and recognition for his kind and thoughtless act. It never came. Instead the miserable and gormless faces looked at their magazines, mobile devices and train carpet in blissful ignorance.

He looked disappointed and tried to hide his disappointment by looking coolly out of the window.

He failed.
